Bertie King was born in Eyke, near Woodbridge, in 1886 (Cosford Q3-1886 4A:669), son of Hezekiah and Jane KING (née THURKETTLE).
1891 census...Aged 6, he was at Ufford Road, Eyke with his father Hezekiah KING [38] farm labourer; his mother Jane [40] born Hollesley, nr Woodbridge; brothers John W [13] farm labourer, Harry [10], Jeff [7], Alacksy L C [4], Sidney [2] and Fred W [1]; sisters Kate [11] and Ruth [8]. All except his mother were born in Eyke. 1901 census...Aged 16, farm labourer, he was still in Eyke with his parents, brothers John, Jeffery, Alexander (all farm labourers), Fred and Harold [8] and sisters Helena [7]. 1911 census...Aged 25, a farm labourer, he was in Ingham lodging with the WORBY family. His parents were at Ferry Farm, Sudbourne, Orford with his brother Harold and sister Helena He married Jane CUTTING [28-6-1882] in 1911.(Bury St Edmunds Q4-1911 4A:2009), their son Frederick Gordon was born on 4-12-1914. |

He enlisted in Culford.
The battalion war dairy simply says for the 21st August " Spoilbank - 19253 Pte F Goss and 12730 Pte B King killed, one man wounded." It was a quiet spell, spent at Spoilbank in Reserve mainly, constructing a communications trench from HQ to the support line near Norfolk Lodge with occasional feint attacks and demonstrations to relieve the pressure in the sector.
